I'd like to see an article done on the South Pacific Coast, a now defunct branch of the Espee that ran from Oakland along the east side of San Francisco Bay thru San Jose and Los Gatos where it climbed over and thru the Santa Cruz Mtns to Santa Cruz on the Pacific. It connected w/ the SP in Oakland, San Jose and in Santa Cruz on three separate lines making for incredible operation potential. It ran weekend excursions, usually doubleheaded steam, thruout the '40s, and traversed many trestles, went thru several long tunnels, skirted along steep riverbanks, and had very tight curvature. It ran from the Oakland "Mole" warterfront terminal on SF Bay to the amusement park area of Santa Cruz. right along the ocean. Redwood logging dominated the action in the late 1800s when it was 3 foot ng and onto the early part of the 20th century. Motive power was all light - 2-8-0s and later 4 axle Geeps. Remnants of it remain today and the southwestern end connects w/ the 3 foot Felton & Big Trees RR which has run Shays and other unique stuff. (haven't been there lately) Bruce MacGregor has written a couple of fine books on this route. Don't know why I've never seen any HO railroads done of this branch, since it's setting is in God's country - some of the most beautifully scenic terrain in California. I know of at least one large scale ng layout and another HOn3 or On3 set in the late nineteenth century, but that's it.
