Dang, first a moderator said kindergarten klopperei and now schadenfruede. I'm going to have to brush up on meine wortschatz!!! I grew up in California thinking I should have taken spanish, but around here German seems to pop up more frequently. Must be a part of the upper midwest culture.

I'm here to learn and share what I have learned, and to appreciate the excellent work that others have done. I also don't mind receiving compliments for the work that I have done too.
Sometimes I have spoken when I shouldn't, and that has been a good learning experience as well. Recently I have noticed that I haven't had the taste of shoe leather in my mouth nearly as often as I used to.

I find this forum in particular has more newbies than my other ones, that being said, one can sometimes find answers here in a timely manor. Searching the web can be futile at times when only a certain command will deliver the needed results.
I've been in the hobby for 45 years. I don't know it all...so I'm still learning.
It's a way to persue answers to questions and a way hopefully for me to help others.

Building my first layout after a long separation from the hobby. I need lots of help and information as I am hand laying track and turnouts. When I get ready to power the layout up, I will need even more help and advice. These forums are an excellent way to share knowledge and helpful advice.

Being an old fashioned jack of all trades (and well proven to be master of none), I am always looking for ideas that can be usefully tweaked into some aspect that makes it appear that I am a better modeler than what I truely am. In return, it is an ego boost when I can pass along a tip or two that are not so contrarian in content, that some one else can benefit from my fumblings.

My first question here was answered in 10 minutes while I was still online that night. "What a country", Yakoff Smirnoff.
In other words, yes, great place to find answers. Question now is, is there room to build a layout in a timely manner in your timely manor?

To be honest I'm not really sure. I've never been the Chatty Kathy member that some are (not a criticism), but I post much less frequently than in years past. I suppose I come here mostly out of habit. I tend to hang out more on other forums where the conversations are not as "managed."
Still, if there were more threads like this one, http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/244543.aspx, the forum would be more interesting to me.

Brunton, I've sent you a PM.
To learn and to see others' model railroads. Every time I searched the internet with a model railroading question, this forum popped up with good answers so I figured I would pull up a chair. Oh, and to listen to LION roar about what HIM up to.
I also wanted a place to keep a journal of my layout progress. I've used blogs for other "projects" which is great for having a personal reference, but you don't get the interaction that comes with participating in a group like this.
Of course the ones who do not particapate will not answer.
I look for info myself. I stay away from the gripe threads. and do not read lions posts.
I mostly like to help out when I can. The hobby has been beneficial to me over the years and it's nice to give back.

I got started reading the forums to learn. As I learned, I started to share both what I had been told and the results I had experienced.
I know I have learned many valuable. time saving methods,as well as trivial things I may never use, but are fun to know. Also, that there are often more than one way to accomplish good results and I have been able to find a way that works "best" for me.
Thanks to all who have answered my questions. Some ideas have worked better than others, but having options certainly has broadened my knowledge and given me more confidence.
I do hope that my answers have helped others, whether they have found my ideas useful or someone else's a better option. If they have learned something, I have accomplished my goal.
Hopefully, I will have many more questions as I progress with my larger layout and that I can add to someone elses knowledge with the answers I give.
Mutual sharing is why I participate in the forums.

Have fun with your trains
A lot of my reasons have been said. Given that I somewhat model in a bit of a vacuum (no hobby shop [closest one being roughly 1 hour away] and no railroad club [I have no idea where the closest one of those is]), these forums are my opportunity to ask questions when I need assistance on a project or if I see something on my local line that I am curious about. More times than not, these forums have helped me get on the right track (sorry for the pun) with a project.
1. I am looking to meet model railroaders who live nearby Orlando South or Oceola North counties in FL.
2. Looking to share experiences in building and operating layouts.
3. Personnel preference is N scale but enjoy helping others in any model scale.

Well, Wayne, it is the likes of you who I aspire to make as many "mistakes" as! Its your mistakes that I look up to as my bar to achieve!
Like others, this forum is a place that I share in common with people of the same interest. it is one of several outlets that feed my train nut instinct! Additionally, it is a great source of ideas, and, as limited as my experience is in the hobby, I do contribute an idea now and then.
