Hey mobileman 44 !
Do you really have to be so sarcastic about it ? I don't treat you that way !

Just to clear up any confusion yes this diorama/layout is completely scratch built except for the old T and the figure which have also been highly modified. That is why they are considered museum pieces and are now in the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.
JohnReid Instead, from now on I will now post pics and text together.Once in awhile I will post a thumbnail which will take you directly to other pics of interest on the that topic .Sorry bout that ,ya gotta have patience with me as I am 71 now and not all that familiar with computers.

You just keep posting any old way you feel like. I for one like to see what you're up to.
If I am not interested in a thread I don't open it, or if I have I don't revisit it.. I wish others would do the same.
If it is any consolation, I have recieved PMs from people that don't like the humour I throw into my post (especially when I use Waldorf and Statler) And some others have called me an idiot for the sea of pink foam I have used on this layout, instead of using more traditional methods.
There is room here for all of us. Keep up the good work John. It is impressive.

Sarcastic ????
Nope, not my intent at all. Just trying to let you know that the reader would get a lot more out of your postings if there was some narrative to go along with your pictures. Seems like a reasonable attempt to help you along in your journey......
Ha, if I was to exercise my abilities in being sarcastic - I do believe I would be thrown off the Forum!
ENJOY !!!!
ENJOY !

Thanks Brent ,much appreciated. Cheers ! John.
What's all the fuss about, guys?
I read mobilman44's reply not long after he posted it, and I didn't detect a bit of sarcasm.
His point was well taken that a series of photos without any explanatory text leaves the reader wondering.

If it is any consolation, I find a lot of humour in your posts, especially when you use Waldorf and Statler. Those two old fools are hysterical.
How about one here dealing with the John Reid / mobilman44 feud?
This pic is pretty much self-explanatory.I made my roof with tongue depressors although for the smaller scales coffee stir stiks would work just as well.
JohnReid Note:I can see now that the way I started this thread can be confusing (*** it confuses me) It was meant to help me save time as I post my stuff to 26 different sites, aircraft, ships, cars,RR ,Art , etc..... John,
Let me start by saying that this is intended as constructive criticism and, hopefully, you will take it in that spirit.
I have to believe that if you are posting the same or similar material on 26 different web sites, that is at the heart of the problem. If you are copying and pasting, or cutting and pasting, that can easily lead to confusion by the poster as well as the viewers.
Posting images preceded by text, and/or followed by text , text is not that difficult. You simply type the text, inserting links to the images along the way. However, when copying and pasting or cutting and pasting, from one web site to another, things can get confusing quick. Age is no excuse. I am not far behind you in age, but as we approach 2012, computers are now a way of life, and effective communication requires computer expertise. You gotta stick with it.
The problem you face on this forum is that your artistic talent is not easily understood by us model railroaders who, for the most part, are assembling kits, sometimes kitbashing, and rarely scratch building. What you are doing, at least on this thread, is scratch building.
This particular thread lacks coherence. By virtue of its title, it professes to tell us How to Build Backdrops. But there is little "how to" and what you are building is not a backdrop but, rather, a scratch built structure. The thread jumps back and forth, the updates are sporadic, and it is hard to follow on the basis of images alone. It requires companion text.
I have to believe that your threads would be better received if they were a little better organized and brought to a conclusion more quickly instead of going on indefinitely. It would definitely help those of us with a short attention span.
Just some thoughts for your consideration.

Thanks Rich.
There are some very funny people that participate on this forum. I often leave here after having a good laugh. The Grumps can carry on being Grumpy for now, but we will get them to crack eventually.
Just click on the thumbnail for more pics.
Hi!
I read Richhotrain's commentary and found it constructive and in good taste.
The OP however, just follows it up with another picture w/o narrative.
I guess he showed him!

Ha! Ha! That's a good one....but just think of it this way: if you click on JR's image, it leads you to one-thousand two-hundred and fifty (1,250) pictures with no narrative!
Usually a picture is worth a thousand words, but in JR's case a thousand pictures is worth....well....I'm not sure!
The only thing I'm real sure of is that this guy can model like nobody's business; which doesn't negate the fact that the presentation can be frustrating on several levels.
It might help a little, maybe, if somebody killed this thread about backdrops and start a new one that has something to do with the actual content. Maybe.

99% of my stuff is done with hand tools. On occasion I will use a belt sander or a rotary burr to save some time on hand sanding but even these tools are not really necessary.Scratch building is easy and cheap to do once you get used to used to working with the materials.
Click on thumbnail for a bigger pic and more of themI do not seal the bare wood shingles. I paint each one with thin washes of gray flat acrylic and let it soak in. Be sure to let some of the underlying wood grain show through.Finish with chalk pastels, brown, gray, black etc..The pastels will stick because of the rough surface but you could use a spray matte fixative if you want as a sealer.Mine are going in glass cases so I don't bother with the final step, besides the acrylic gray paint acts as a sealer itself.
NorthCoast RR,
You made me laugh out loud - something I rarely do anymore.
Thank you!
By the title of this posting I thought the subject was backdrops.
Apparently not, not too sure what it is about?
Seems like random material being posted
