 ns3010:

Over break, I got a good bit of modeling done (a lot for me). Unfortunately, I am down the shore for the New Year, and didn't take photos of my work before I left. So I'll just have to show them in 2011.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Wow! Let me get my shades! How many lights do you have on that thing? Post some day shots for comparison.

Good work!

Rob, that refinery is amazing!  Hope it ends up in one of the magazines somewhere.

I second what others have commented...Rob, that refinery is amazing!! One of the most impressive night displays I think I've ever seen. I'd be hard pressed to tell without a good look that that wasn't a real refinery at night!

Wow Rob! I guess it is obvious why you have not been here in a while. Based on any specific location?

Crandell,

I am an N&W fan. I started my new layout featuring the N&W and Southern circa 1955. I am prototype freelancing but use the Pocahontas Division as my main theme. What area, era, and prototype are you modeling? Would love to see more of your workWink

Thanks for all the kind words guys!  This was taken in my garage and is part of a layout kinda, it is built to the FREE-Mo standards and is a "module set."  (http://www.free-mo.org/)  There is 5 pieces of the set, 3 2x6 main line "modules" and 2  2.5x6 spurs.  This is one of the spurs.   If anyone was at the Milwaukee National Train Show last July you wouldve seen it inner-connected with other fellas (from 5 other states) set ups.  We had a 40x110 set up! and it was fantastic!  You can take a cab ride around our layout... In 4 parts)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL_oJww4HR0

I will post more pics in the layout section as that is probably where they should go?  Or maybe in the photo gallery as soon as I can get time.

There are approx 90 lights on here right now, but I stll need to install some on the smoke stacks and water cooler.  I would like to set this up outside by a field, where I can get some nice sun light and sky in theback ground someday!

I bought A.I.M. plaster supports, which were too short for my needs.  Since I was using blue foam anyway, I fashioned some lower sections to look like the wedged sections of the prototype.  I painted the plaster and foam sections a generic tan color, then stained with watered down craft paint.  I think I used a variety of sienna and umber for a limestone effect.

Here is a picture from last year to show the raw beginnings.

This is a shot of the piers after the stain.

A great ending for 2010 and a great beginning to 2011.

Some really fine modeling and photography here again this week.

DJ/Grampy, a truly fine video. Your layout is quite a work of art.

Mac. I liked your video. The music and the B&W video set the proper mood.

Rob. What a magnificent refinery. The night shots are great.

Not much doing on the BRVRR lately. I've been working on an update to my website that should be done sometime this week.

Here is a photo of the latest addition to the layout.

There is still some detailing to do and I have to finish the ground cover.

Here is one of a couple of famous rivals.

The K-4 is a Bachman and the Hudson is a BLI. Both are pulling short consists of Walther's passenger cars.

Keep up the good work guys. I love this thread.

Remember its your railroad

Craig, in truth I should probably defer to you and your imagery if you model the N&W.  I do not.  In fact, I don't strictly model anything at all.  My layout is entirely fanciful, if accidentally looking like something in the western Dakotas or Oklahoma or Nevada or something like that.  I do prefer the western look, but I am also cheap in my ascription of time and money toward trees.  I am a dabbler.  I just collect trains I like to see, I really like the imagery side of the hobby, and I try to have fun to the extent possible.

So, any photos you see of mine are just what I can make of what I have, and it's a hodge-podge.  I admit it.  Confused

This weekend I finished the Maintenance Building that goes with the Roundhouse for the layout at Boothbay Railway Village. I will post some picx when the installation is done, but that will not be until February as we are busy getting ready to go to the Amherst Railroad Show in W. Springfield MA at the end of this month.

Rob,

Love the refinery.  You built one of my Model Railroad fantasies from child hood.

Here are a some shots of a scenery in progress section on the layout

I just got two of the 81' depressed center flat cars. I weathered them and added heavy loads from Chooch Enterprises. The tie downs are 40 links per inch chain. Here is one of them, I'm still finishing up on the other.
