You might also ask him why Kalmbach has put "commmission junction" tracking adware /spyware on everyone of our PCs. Look at www.commissionjunction.com and look for the link to some of their most important accounts - Kalmbach is proudly listed! This is a tracking software that is used by publishers to determine where you go on the internet, gathers private info about you, and then slams you with spam, slows down your computer, etc. It attaches to your various files and should be removed everytime you get on the internet.

If you have Spybot S&D look for the referenced "commission junction" spyware/adware name to pop up whenever you 'check for problems w/ Spybot S&D.

Two questions for Bergie -
1) why does Kalmbach state that when you sign up for a Kalmbach forum you do not get spam?
2) how would you feel if you came home someday and found someone snooping thru your trash, your personal records, your underwear and socks drawer, or your wallet?

What kalambach uses are cookies not spyware. It's a fine line between the two. Kalmbach does not sell information to spammers. What they use it for is everytime you sign into the forums it keeps your name signed on. In the corner it show's when you last visited and how many post have been put up since your last visit. There are probably other features but all the use this information for you is to make your stay here more enjoyable, not to send you spam.

That's a pretty common misconception. As george745 said, the Commission Junction cookies that are set is not spyware. Spyware does what you describe, Bill, but these cookies do not. The purpose of the CJ cookies are to track sales made when a site visitor clicks on links to products or services. The referring website is paid a small commission when a sale is made as a result. It says to a merchant that you clicked on a link on Site A that took you to Site B where you bought something. This info is used to tell the merchant that Site A gets a commission from the sale. And that's all it does.

Part of my business is publishing a number of websites including a book review site, an Adirondack outdoors site & a couple of music sites. The way these sites pay for themselves is through commissions from links as described above. Without them and the cookies that are set during the process, I would not be able to offer free access to the information and likely would simply shut them down. There are three major networks including CJ representing thousands of merchants as well as many merchants that run their own affiliate marketing program. Everyone of these merchants, which includes nearly every major retailer with an online presence use cookies to track commissions from referring links.

To some computer users, any cookie is an invasion of their privacy no matter what it is used for, even as george745 said when it simply remembers your login so you don't have to enter your info everytime you read these forums. It is far from spyware or adware, however.

I like Spybot S&D and it has helped clean lots of nasties from my own computers. Why it misleadingly defines CJ 's cookies as "problems" is something I don't quite understand. They also call BFast & Linksynergy cookies as "problems." These are simply other merchants' cookies fromthe other two major affiliate networks. Spybot need to do a better job of defining what the cookie does to avoid unnecessary confusion and fear.

True, but as I outlined above, it is NOT spyware or Adware. It tracks NO personal info from your computer, harvests NO emails for spam, and triggers NO unwanted ads to pop when you visit your favorite websites. Calling it spyware doesn't make it so.

It only tracks referrals for the purpose of crediting commissions for sales made.

Spybot and a few other programs that fail to differentiate the legitimate use of cookies from the harmful software do a disservice to users by causing unnecessary fears. It even calls the Webtrends cookie that runs the counter on my websites a "problem." To the typical user that runs Spybot, it seems like this is a serious issue. An otherwise good program, Spybot is lousy at defining what they consider a "problem." There are plenty of real problems out there without creating issues where none exist.

First, thanks to Wayne for his great responses.

Next, we do not send spam, Bill. We have long-term relationships with our customers and would never do anything to destroy the trust you've put in us. Look at the companies you're getting spam from. Do you really think we'd sell your name to companies like that? We don't. Having several Trains.com e-mail address that get pointed to me, I get hundreds of spam e-mails a week. No one hates spam more than me. If you're getting spam, it's not as a result of registering with Trains.com.
