Best customer service I've had
Posted by tbdanny on Thursday, May 20, 2010 2:43 PM

Hi all,

I'd like to commend Precision Scale Co for their customer service.  I recently stuffed up a part on one of their HOn3 tank car kits, and was asked to give them a phone call after emailing regarding replacement parts.  Even after I'd mentioned that I'd messed up the parts themselves - and the original email had said I was willing to buy replacements - they told me they couldn't charge me for the two replacements that I needed, and that sending them down to Australia wouldn't be a problem.  That's what I call customer service!

Cheers,

tbdanny

I've had similar experiences with both Athearn and Walthers.  The problems I had weren't customer caused but instead were defective equipment and missing parts.  Good customer service ranks right up there with overall quality and value for my $ when it comes to whether or not I make a purchase.

I ordered a locomotive from Trainworld (Proto H10-44, Milwaukee, with DCC and Sound for $159) on Wednesday and had it on my doorstep when I came home Thursday.  They're in NY, and I'm outside of Boston.  Plain vanilla UPS shipping.  Love these guys.

I recently messed up decals on the "Greatland Sugar" Walthers kit, so I sent an e-mail to the customer service dept. asking for replacement decals and also asked them how much it would cost me. The same day I had a reply from Jerry Roy (Walthers Cust.Serv.dept.), mentionning that he was going to send me a set of decals "free of charge", and a week later ( I live in Québec, Canada) I received my decals. Thank you Walthers for your excellent customer service.

I have many of the same companies that you listed. I'd like to also add Broadway Limited and Show-Me Lines (brick and mortar shop in Grandview, MO) to that list.

Whistling

My four favorites (never fail) are Dallas Model Works from Texas.

and T-J Model trains and Things in Washington State.

In Canada it is CMT (Canadian Model trains) in Mississauga, Ontario

and Trains and Such in Calgary, Ab.

These are folks to trust for accuracy, speed and assistance.

I have to tell this Walthers story:

I received a box from Walthers and it contained half of my order and half of someone else's order (mine was HO and his was N).  I called and told customer service.  She figured out that the two boxes were next to each other while the stock pickers were filling the orders.  The pickers got half done and then the boxes got reversed.  They sent my stuff overnight and included a pre-paid label so I could send his stuff back.

So far, this is about what you'd expect.  Here's the cool part:  The customer service gal asked me to tell her what was in the other guys order (what N-scale stuff I received).  Based on that and my order number, she figured out who it was, and she said she was going to call him to let him know about the mix-up.  Imagining how I'd feel to receive such pro-active service, I bet they got that other guy's business for life!

Phil,
I'm not a rocket scientist; they are my students.
