ARTHILL

It seems so easy to complain and so hard to make a great Weeping Willow tree in HO. How about showing us some of the great modeling you have learned to do from those great old issues. I could use some help on applying the June, 1950 article on superdetailing a John English Yard Bird. That would be a better use of this forum from my perspective.

Sorry, I'm busy "applying" Jack Work's April 1963 article on handlaying turnouts right now.

Now that was great article. I tried it in 68. It was too much for me then. I may have to try again. The super detailing is sure a challenge. I started it in 1950, right after my dad gave me the model for Christmas. I hope to finish it by this Christmas. I will put a pic in WPF if it works. Finding all the parts I lost was also a challenge.

If you think you have it right, your standards are too low. my photos http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/ARTHILL/ Art

Wow.  I guess I'll throw my two cents in.  I have to agree with MR -- the deterioration of spelling, grammar, and writing skills in general is alarming.  What is more alarming is the way so many people justify it or make excuses for it.  Unbelievable.  When one publishes, it needs to be correct.  If one doesn't have the time to double check/edit the piece, then that person does not need to publish yet.  Push the deadline back or manage time better so having to rush at the deadline does not happen.  Forums are another matter altogether; it is a place to share ideas and information and is not a professional publication.  Besides, most of us are not professional writers.  We will make mistakes.  A published magazine should make no excuses; just acknowledge the error, apologize, learn from it, and move on. The fact that so many people are up in arms over this is amusing.  Should MR have called Andy out on it?  Why not?  It is an open forum.  If Andy can't stand the heat, he should get another job or learn to do a better job editing.  By the way, it appears Andy doesn't seem too upset about this thread as he has not chimed in.

I can't think of any specific examples off the top of my head, but I know for a fact that I've noticed several spelling/grammar mistakes in the last couple of years in Model Railroad Craftsman. With the exception of the present thread, I can't recall the last time I noticed a similar error in MR. Maybe I missed them, but I don't recall seeing any threads on this or any other forum bashing RMC for that. Could it be that some people are quick to bash MR because they already have a beef with them for some reason?

Like it or not, for better or worse, MR has evolved over the years, and may not be exactly what it used to be. But I still like it, and I think the articles have been much better over the last several months. I'm keeping my subscription.

My 3 cents worth (inflation hits everything): One observation concerning this HORRENDOUS ERROR has not been made - there is every possibility that Andy spelled the name correctly in his initial copy but it was changed by the proof-reader(s).

Midnight Railroader excuses his inability to write a cohesive sentence with the observation that he isn't doing it for pay. My gut feel is that anything else he writes (whether for pay, publication, or just a communication to express his ideas to another group) is just as grammatically correct as his comment that started this thread.   Even though he can't write worth a diddily dip, he feels compelled and empowered to criticize those that do. To paraphrase another old saying, it has been my general observation that 'Those that can, do -- those that can't, criticize'.

Since Midnight Railroader is so incensed that there are errors in a publication that he has purchased a copy of, it is my fervent hope that he never purchases another copy - and I, for one, will never look at another comment authored by Midnight Railroader.

We're done here.  There's another discussion somewhere on the forum for all of us.
