Weathering locos,rolling stock...everything
Posted by Santa Fe all the way! on Saturday, May 3, 2008 12:00 PM
Hi, I need some help finding a really good instructional book or DVD on weathering. Any suggestions? I've noticed alot of books about painting and detailing have a small section on weathering, but no books devoted JUST to weathering. I'd like to start by weathering my new Blueline Big Boy,hopefully to improve its looks. Thanks.

Search the Net or eBay for weathering videos by Scotty Mason. They are about the best I've found out there.

There is no better single source for weathering information on the net.

David B

David B is 100% on this one.

Don't expect to be given "atta-boys!" for everything you do. Be prepared for (constructive) criticism on improving your work. Just don't expect that the aluminium covered hopper that Joe Blow covers in rust is going to go over very well.

The crew at MTW is a top notch bunch, and will help you develop your own weathering techniques that are near perfect.

Really? I just checked the link, and it seems fine.
Do it again, you still haven't got it right! I treat you as a model railroader not because you are a model railroader, but because I am a model railroader

Thanks guys, I tried the modeltrainsweathered website, but there having some trouble right now. It asks me to download arobat and I already have it. Could this be someone trying to get people to download something harmful?

Hmm-that shouldn't happen. I've been a member there for 3 1/2 years & never had that occur. I just checked & everything was fine there. Rich (the head honcho of the site) runs a tight ship, & is totally honest & above board. Try again tomorrow & see what happens. If not, hit the email button on the site-that'll put you in touch with Rich, & let him know what's going on-he'll get back to you as soon as he can.

I would suggest that you don't start on your Big Boy.

Learn the craft on inexpensive rolling stock kits and then apply your new-found skills to more expensive models.

Weathering intermodal containers is a good way to practice w/o breaking the bank as well.

You may need to go to Adobe.com to get the latest version of Acrobat.

Thats really good advice Dallas, I thought Id practice on an old crappy Tyco boxcar first. The more I look into weathering, the more there seems to be to it. Steam engines can be very challenging to weather as different types weathered differently. Thank goodness there are some things common among all of them.

Strangely, I have had some problems like that on occasion. (Not with this site) What I did was I opened Acrobat first, then went to a site that opened an Acrobat file and it worked OK.

Elmer.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.

(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.
