Constant Speed on Elevation Changes
Posted by cheapclassics on Friday, January 26, 2024 10:44 PM

Good evening all,

I am sure this may have been addressed in another topic and I apologize for any repetitiveness, but I do not frequent here much.  With DCC power supply and locomotives, do they maintain a constant speed both climbing and descending hills?  I have a 4x6 table with what is now an oval but may consider an over and under route if I do not have to worry about a runaway train.  Also, I use EZ track and am wondering if the compatible track supports are an effective way to make the grade rise and fall.  Thank you so much for whatever attention anyone can render on these matters.

Keep on trainin'....safely,

not the power supply, the decoder if it has Back EMF (BEMF)

just as a generator produces power when turned by an external source, the armature windings of a motor also produce a voltage opposing the flow of current thru the armature while it is turning.   This (BEMF) voltage is proportional to the RPM of the armature

decoders with the BEMF feature adjust the PWM to the motor so that the BEMF of the motor matches the commands DCC speed, maintaining the speed of the motor regardless if the train is going up or downhill.

The BEMF is adjustable by programming specific CVs on your loco's decoder. Some steamers can run erratically if the BEMF is set too high.
