If you are messing around with decoder installation at all, Kapton tape is an essential tool. Other tapes will fail or cause problems.  Litchfield Station sells a small roll of Kapton tape for $2.50, and other dealers have similar offers. My local hobby store will sell it by the foot, wrapped around one of the store's free pens.

For these situations, I have used wide heat sink material, keeping one end open for ventilation.
