Broadway Limited Imports Paragon2 Decoder
Posted by GM SD70ACe on Saturday, May 2, 2015 2:19 AM

Can it be that these decoders at the moment quality have problems or problems with systems that are operated with 18V DC voltage?

As fired at me at a AC6000* the decoder processor is by adding up without smoke signals. But the locomotive was the area where the processor was / is very warm. Dangers she was just 6min times.

In the second case. 1 week ago. Was it a 2 months old 2-10-2 which made after 3min. Short-circuit and the tender was smoke signals from him. The synchronous smoke I turned off by a switch on the bottom of the Cabs.

In the Manuels only one 16V DC voltage is. Whether this should be the maximum voltage. It does not appear in the respective Manuel.

Because on the same system also locomotives with Tsunami, ESU, TSC, NCS decoder drive without problems. This up to 2-3 hours.

* Since the board (decoder) was replaced for free.

This is a direct exerpt from the BLI Paragon 2 Diesel Operators Manual, page 2. Found at http://www.broadway-limited.com/support/manuals/Paragon2%20Diesel%20Operators%20Manual.pdf

Operation with a DC Power Pack

Your Paragon 2 diesel locomotive is ready-to-run. Simply place the locomotive on a track powered by any DC power pack with a variable output up to 16 volts DC.

Up to 16V DC means 16 volts Maximum.  What type of power supply are you using?

The steam operators manual says nearly the same and can be found here:

http://www.broadway-limited.com/support/manuals/Paragon2%20Steam%20Manual%20(2.11.09).pdf

Other locomotive decoders may be rated for a higher DC voltage.

Practically every brand of decoder I have ever used is rated for 16 Volts DC MAXIMUM if it is dual mode.

Anything higher than 16V max will cause issues. Most recommend 12V (Like the NMRA.). The 18V is most likely your issue.

Although I didn't use a RRampmeter to verify the voltage properly, I once ran my HO layout with Paragon steam (QSI decoders) on the O Scale setting by mistake.  I believe I had been doing it for at least a full week.  My digital meter indicated 19 volts.

My decoders continued to function and have for all this time.

I wonder if there isn't something else going one.

War today in the Club premises and had a look. The system is supplied with 16V DC voltage and not with 18V DC.
