Hey Rich

I think you'd be safe in saying your layout is more done than others
My wife use to ask me if i'd ever finish a layout with people on it
well now i have people but my layout us still not done
Waiting for more video
zstripe richhotrain That said, I do love my layout. It might well be better to do the necessary work to make it higher quality than to tear it down and start over from scratch. Rich The above statement...is Your ''Dream layout", refine it, one section at a time. Great effort. Take Care! Frank

Rich,
Anyone watching one of these "on-board" videos HAS to take into consideration that the point of view is from the track, or engineer's seat.
Some of the classiest restaurants I've been in (not many will let me in) use the same black ceiling technique. Your's is the first I've seen in a layout room. Bravo!
We have spent years building layouts so the visitor sees the best view from the aisle. Go to any Holywood set (and that's what we're building with our layouts) and once you go behind the scenes you're going to be confronted with the same thing! Styrofoam and 2x4s, papier mâché, or nowadays, green screen backgrounds that can be digitized with the CG department.
I think it's great to be able to see this stuff. Now with these cameras maybe we WILL start to concentrate on the trackside view. I, for one, seeing my onboard video, will be making just a few changes to remove some distractions but otherwise, as the Great And Mighty OZ once said...
"PAY NO ATTENTION to that man behind the curtain!"
I'm glad we live in an age where we can even think of making such a video. Once I get my Mobius maybe I'll relegate my ROAM to being a dash-cam which seems to be popular these days.
Looking forward to more video! Ed

gmpullman Thanks for posting that video. When I uploaded my on-board video I chose the Youtube image stabilizer. Bad move! The result looked like a cross between a LavaLamp and a fishbowl. I removed it right away. Your black painted ceiling is a great idea to remove the visual distraction and give the illusion of space. Great idea!

When I first posted the video on YouTube, it asked me if I wanted to have YouTube apply its stabilzer to the video. But, as you said, it looked very artificial. The movement that you see on my video is prototypical in my view since any jerkiness is the result of the camera reacting to the track work. So, I went without the stabilizer.
Regarding the black painted ceiling, it is actually just bare wood in an unfinished basement. Since all of my lighting is overhead fluorescent strip lights, the periphery simply appears dark, although it is not.
Using a mini cam to ride the rails reveals every big and every little flaw on your layout. It also can be distracing as you catch sight of the off layout clutter and, in my case, the unfinished basement. In some portions of the surrounding area, I have hung dark blue curtains as backdrops to hide clutter when I photograph portions of the layout. I probably ought to enclose the entire layout with those curtains.
If I ever build my Dream Layout, I would have to give some serious thought to finishing the basement and, in the process, install better ligting than the fluorescent light strips. But, the sheer thought of all that work is daunting.
My layout is a lesson learned. It is big, but it was constructed by an amateur model railroader who now wishes he had done a lot of things differently. To get it done in my lifetime, I moved along too quickly and without the experience to do it right, especially with the little details. To the naked eye, standing over the layout, it looks a lot better than when subjected to the lens eye of the mini cam.
That said, I do love my layout. It might well be better to do the necessary work to make it higher quality than to tear it down and start over from scratch.
Hi, Rich...
I like seeing what your Mobius can do. The Brown truck will be bringing one to me on Monday! I'll be able to do a side-by-side of the Mobius and the (now-outdated!) Contour Roam2.
The form factor of the Mobius has me sold. The Contour is small but still five times bigger than the Mobius and to my eye, the picture quality is about equal on both.
Thanks again for all your effort, Rich Ed
Thanks for all of the nice words about the layout. If it did nothing else, the purchase of the Mobius mini cam strengthened my resolve to get it right on the next layout.
I will post another video of a train crossing the bascule bridges.
What are your thoughts on the quality of the images from the Mobius?
"One difference between pessimists and optimists is that while pessimists are more often right, optimists have far more fun."
Looks like the camera would be a lot of fun.Very nice layout,I really like the use of all the signal towers.

Wow Rich! That was great! How long have you been working on your layout? There is a lot of work there. The Train didn't go over your bascule bridge, or did I just miss it?

richhotrainOK, I decided to stop fighting with Photobucket and just use YouTube. Remember, now, the purpose of this thread is to view the results of the Mobius Mini Cam.
Rich, I just watched the video. So cool! When is Santa coming again?

richhotrain Welllllllllllllllllllllllllll You're missing lots of Ties between your turnouts and regular track And not sure what the black dots on the sky boards are ~~~~Bugs ????? But hey~~~ Come over an help me fix the kinks in my track C&O Fan I used my camera to find the spikes i forgot to pull and also the missing ties ~~~Guess i got lazy toward the end of track laying On my Dream Layout, I will still use nails, but I will remove them after the glued down ballast dries. And I will put down a heckuva lot less ballast. And I will paint the ties and rails. Then, I would add clouds and structures on my blue backdrops. Hmmm, let's see, what other flaws are obvious? Rich

C&O Fan 720 has a tendency to make the center track spike heads look bigger.

There are places on your layout that will show the walls reguardless of what mode you use
But 720 is the Narrow Focus (some call it Tunnel Vision) mode
720 has a tendency to make the center track spike heads look bigger
C&O Fan When you power up it starts in 1080 mode (solid orange light) if you press the mode button you will switch to 720 mode (blue Light) press the shutter button and the blue light will flash indicating you are now recording in 720 mode

I have a tendency to run too fast as i try to save file size
your speed seemed good but its fun to play around
I also enjoy listening to the pusher loco running
Yep, I used 1080 mode.
I will experiment with that.
The other consideration is how fast or slow to run the loco pushing the camera car. I used 12 speed steps on a 28 speed step scale.
Nice layout Much bigger than mine Liked the signals and the passing trainof course this type of video shows things that need attention
If you use an editor you can crop out the Parts that you don't like
Looked like 1080 mode
I liked the parts that you couldn't see off layout stuff just sky board

So, overlook the layout flaws, and there are many. And, overlook the off layout clutter.

That glitch at 1:44 of the video was my flat car derailing, not the camera misbehaving.
richhotrain I use an Editor (Wonder Share) to convert The MOV files to MP4 because they up load so much faster I always use u tube so i can also post to other places like Facebook and email to my friends that aren't members here etc C&O Fan richhotrain Trying to upload a video as we speak. Rich What video editor did you Use ? The Mobius produces videos in .MOV format. It is easy to upload the video to YouTube, and I could simply provide a link to the YouTube video on this thread. But, I was hoping to insert the video itself into this thread. So, I uploaded the video to Photobucket, and it supposedly uploaded successfully. But, that is where my problems began. For whatever the reason, I am unable to see it or play it back on Photobucket, so I am unable to capture the link necessary to insert it into this thread. Rich
