Hope your having a wonderful Labor day weekend, Summer's winding down which means, time to watch football, and more time to work on our layouts!! Well I'm starting out with a finished reversal loop and a Loco, an Union Pacific heritage 8444 that made a popping noise, I picked up the loco, pulled off (carefully) the front truck to only find that the worm gear had somehow disconnected from the truck, and fall into my hand.I tried to place it back inside but there's seems to be half of the black plastic piece from the top of the gear broken off, the loco had seemed to have a strange idle before, this happened, I would give it a just enough juice to make it run at low speed, it would continue to run slow after giving it more juice, but idle high, and creep along the track! I think it was a victim of a serious overdose of track ballast, My grandson(bless his heart) wanted to help by doing the ballast and I thought after cleaning the track and letting it dry it was good to run the loco, Well now I know. is there an all night Nscale locomotive repair store,?? NAW, JUST kIDDIN"! sounds like time to take it into Hobby repair?! or is there a quick fix????

Chances are, the plastic clip that holds the truck in place has not broken, but merely slipped off.
You'll have to remove the shell in order to get the truck back in place. I've never ran into a single instance of the clip breaking, although I supposed it could happen under certain circumstances.
Lubricate the worm gear and motor bearings while you have the shell off.
Who made the locomotive? Kato, Atlas? You stated that you were looking for a N scale repair shop.
So I guess that this is an N scale unit?
Darn - I thought we were talking about real fireworks!
Of course, if you were to continue to pour the power to the locomotive you might at least get some HO scale smoke!
Seriously, I hope you can solve the problem, and congratulations on allowing your grandson to get involved. We all learn by our mistakes.

OK, I think that you are working on a SD70 ACe unit from Kato.
Some how you have got the truck pulled from the frame. There are two small clips on the truck that slide into two slots on the frame and catch to hold the truck in place. Are you saying that one is missing? I will bet that you have the drive line loose too. It needs to go in first before you place the truck back in place. You need to align the drive line up and then insert the truck. If you have a worm gear that is out then there are other problems. You may need to get a new truck from Kato. The only ones truck they have in stock are the silver ones.
