What is the best and the most simple sensor to use with the lights?

I installed a pair of crossing flashers on a museum layout using an NCE BD20 current detector and a Dallee flasher module. I had to cut the gaps in the rails so that when the loco was leaving the block the caboose was just leaving the road crossing in both directions. In this situation the train is always the same length.
