Atlas Genset w/MRC Decoder Settings
Posted by AussieRescueIL on Sunday, December 2, 2012 8:08 AM

I have the Atlas Genset with the MRC dropin decoder for the engine, not sure how enamored I am with the MRC decoders after seeing how Loksounds sound, and even run.

My issue is getting a decent start speed and then continuing thru to top speed with out being jerky. The engine will lurch if I don't have the start voltage at 15+ and then it comes out of the gate at about 4-5 mph if feels like. That is at speed 1 on a 28 step setting. Step 4-6 is very jerky.

Has anyone speed stepped their gentset with a similar setup to get a better slow speed run, with a better midrange run as well.

I am using the MCR Advanced SQ2 system, I keep the track very clean (code 70) and keep the wheels clean.

Thanks in advance.

If you've never been close to a Genset to know how quiet they are, there are several videos on You Tube.

From what I've read, the MRC decoder is a very poor representation of a real Genset.

The sound in this video is primarily road traffic and the refrigerator car's unit.

I have a BNSF Genset with the MRC sound decoder.    While it does not have actual genset sounds, it does include ditch lights, and the motor control is quite acceptable.  Mine is very smooth running.   Mine starts moving at throttle position 1 with a CV setting of 3.  It ramps up smooth and the 2nd & 3rd genset come on-line as I increase the throttle.

Did you test it on DC before adding the decoder - There may be a 'bind' in the drive train.  Another possibility is that BEMF may be set too high.
