Tsunami FDL16 in a Tower55 ES44AC, but which one??
Posted by Gary UK on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 8:30 AM

Hi guys, Ive got a T55 GE and ever since I got it 3 years ago Ive been unhappy with the sound. I want to fit a Tsunami FDL 16 sound decoder. Would the Tsunami intended for an Atlas loco or the Athearn be appropriate? Im also trying to figure out what voltage these loco's use for the ditch lights, headlights and number boards. I would be gratefull for any advice. Thanks.

A Tsunami is not a good choice for this model.  I have two of them and was also dissatisfied with the Digitrax SoundFX decoder that was in them, so I changed them to a QSI Revolution.  Much better sound and smoother motor control.

so I changed them to a QSI Revolution

And I believe that you can get the Revolution programmed with that bawoop sound that the motor driven air compressor makes when it starts up if you are interested in such things.  I don't know if the Tsunami has that feature.

The GE ES44 does not have a 16-FDL engine in it.  It has the 12-GEVO engine in it  The FDL was used in the previous lines of locomotives like the Dash-8/9(and the basic design goes back to the U25B of 1960).  The current engine was a follow-on to the 16-HDL that had issues(along with the EMD 265H engine).  The GEVO engine was based off of the HDL design, but was not a joint project with a foreign manufacturer like the HDL project.

Right, now that Ive sorted out my IE settings I can reply.

Yup, fully aware of all that Jim, but i am sure that it would sound better than what it does now with the Digitrax "noise" that just sounds like radio interferance!

Im also prety sure that Tsunami sounds better than QSI. Done alot of research into the subject before spending my cash. Their EMD 645E sure sounds better than any QSI. I have QSI loco's and Tsunami so am able to compare directly and theres no contest as far as EMD sound is concerned. The link below is a Youtube video I made of my own custom built and painted N&W SD40-2 using a Cannon cab and parts, Kato chassis and drive.

It also consists and speed matched to the P2K GP30 coupled to it, perfectly and the slow speed control is one of the best I have.
