Clicking Sound from Speaker
Posted by chinapig on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 4:32 PM

Hi Folks,

I purchased a N Scale Con-Cor 2-10-2 on eBay with a Zimo MX620 (maybe an MX62) decoder plus an Elektronik CT GE70 sound decoder fitted.  There now seems to be a fast clicking noise coming from the speaker, which is especially audible when the loco is stationary but also there when the loco is running.  If I remove the Zimo chip, the noise stops and I only get the programmed steam sounds.  I’m sure this noise wasn’t here before.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem?

Cheers, Ted

I'm so far out of my element that it isn't funny, but could this be a capacitor discharging for some reason?

It will be interesting to learn what others have to suggest.

Hi Ted.

Try turning off the ZIMO loco number identification. This is done by setting Bit 2 of CV #112 to 0.

Hi, I think I’ve solved my problem.

I noticed that the clicking from the speaker was only when the loco was going forward and also that the front light was permanently on.  I’m pretty sure the light was directional before.

Anyway, I dismantled the tender and found that one of the front light wires had some insulation missing and was pressed up against the metal at the back of the speaker.  I insulated it and re-assembled and the noise stopped.  It wasn’t this straightforward, as I later put the tender shell on and the noise came back.  I disassembled, poked around again and re-assembled complete with the tender shell and it’s fine now.

Thanks for your comment Art; I’ll certainly bear it in mind if the sound comes back but I’m hoping I won’t need it!

Cheers, Ted
