I just installed this AT1000 decoder into my Athern Genesis SD-70 and went to test it on my layout. Without even setting it to Loco 3 the sound started. I had no throttle response or change of sound on the main line. On the program track it would not find the decoder ID. I took it off the layout and put it on a test track with a Quantum prorammer using OPS mode. Everything worked fine there including the programming of the CV's. After that I tried it on my old MRC Advance2 and it worked great. All other decoders work on the layout without a problem. Anyone ever hear of anything like this before? I talked with Jerry at Litchfield Station but he had no answers for it.

Joe, I am a mere novice when it comes to sound installs. I could not read Soundtraxx or QSI sound decoders on my programming track until I added a booster to it. You didn't mention if your other decoders were sound or not. You also mention trying it on your old MRC Advance2...I take it you have another DCC system on your layout?? If so, what type?
I only have one Soundtraxx decoder...a Tsunami, and the sound on it also starts when the loco is placed on the main. It is a fairly recent install, so I figured this was a feature of the Tsunami and maybe I need to read the manual further. Surely some of the more experienced posters on here will have the answers to some of your questions.
Tsunami decoders require a programming booster to change CVs on a programming track. When you programmed it using the Quantum programmer, that was the booster.
Be aware that there is a serious bug in the diesel Tsunami. If you encounter a short voltage loss due to dirty track or dirty wheels, the train is likely to take off at full speed and be uncontrollable. I'm getting ready to remove a diesel Tsunami and use a QSI because of this problem.
That is common with the Tsunami. I have a bunch of Micro-Tsunami's. Every time I put the loco on the track, I hear the sounds also. I have not yet selected the loco either.
Joining a Yahoo Group can be difficult because of spammers/hackers. Unless you get each character correctly when trying to sign in, your application will not work. Sometimes it takes me five tries to join. The characters are bunched together and it is difficult to figure out what to type in.

I have several different decoders. The only ones that routinely stay quiet when I power up the track (which is the same as setting a new engine on powered track the first time) are the QSI decoders. They are programmed to remain silent until you actually acquire them on the throttle. The Tsunami's can be programmed to remain silent on start-up, but they come set to begin making sound as soon as you restore power to the rails, even when you muted them previously and did not cancel the muting function.
Therefore, it is normal for all decoders, minus the QSI's (not sure about the new Revolution series), to commence their random neutral sounds when they first get power. Your Tsunami won't move, I think, because it has a glitch in the programming, perhaps an odd address still in memory. As Randy Rinker would suggest that all users do, the first thing to do with a new decoder, no matter who sent it to you, is to do a full factory reset to restore all the defaults. Set yourself up from the get-go with a full deck...in other words...from the point of view of having your new decoder ready to respond to your addressing of "03" right away. No guessing if the decoder is bad.

The system I use for my Layout is a NCE procab. The MRC system I have is on the shelf ready to be E-Bay'ed. I just used the MRC for testing on a hunch. I have not tried programming with the MRC but I will. I have six different sound locos on the layout. 3 are QSI, 1 Digitrax, 2 MRC. What I don't understand is why it operates with the MRC but not the NCE. It is the only one that has this problem. Bruce at Litchfield Station speaks very highly about the Tsunami so that was my motivation behind the purchase. In hindsight I think I would be better off sticking with QSI. This is a decoder that just came in from Soundtraxx this last week. I was told they had bugs to be worked out before they shipped out. I wonder what the bugs were the restart problem you guys mentioned.

Thanks Crandell and all, I did a total reset with my QSI programmer on it and it now works. Also it does not make any sound until I give it input. I did a power break test and it returned to the set speed. I was able to program on the main track with the NCE system. Thanks for the hint about the reset.
