Reading Two Arm Signal Masts?
Posted by nbrodar on Monday, November 20, 2006 3:11 PM

As part of my Signal Improvement Project, I'm looking to build some Reading style two arm signal masts.  I have a basic sketch:

I found scads of photos of D&H ones, but can't locate any Reading photos.  Anyone have some they can share?

I don't have any pictures to post but have several books on the Reading that have pictures.  I purchased all the books from Lin's Junction which I believe you are familiar with.

Reading Company In Color Vol 1 - ISBN 1-878887-95-5 Pages 69,70,71,83,85,99
Reading Company In Color Vol 2 - ISBN 1-58248-079-6 Pages 28,40,47,71
The Reading in the Conrail Era Book 1 - ISBN 0-9640425-8-4 Page 61 good detail
The Reading in the Conrail Era Book 2 - ISBN 0-9640425-9-2  Pages  13,102,110

If you cannot find them in a local library let me know.

Thanks Brad.  I'll try and track down those references.

Nick,

Not sure how close to the Lehigh Valley region you are, but on the Bethlehem Branch, in Hellertown, just north of the former road crossing off of water street there is a double signal mast still standing.  Here is a picture of it.

Hi nbrodar

As a general rule on the RR I work for signals are placed on the left hand side of the tracks and the Engine man reads them top to bottom left to right.

Both your sketches are correct for the position the signals are shown to be in what you need to find out is which side of the line your chosen railway had as the standard position for signals this will influence what you do as far as signal placement goes and how they should be read.

There is always the exception to the rule which always has to do with signal sighting ie so the driver can see it

Some times operational considerations come in to it but these are specific signals at specific locations which unless that is what you are modeling you don't need to worry about.

regards John
