Wooden Caboose Plans
Posted by burnside63 on Sunday, August 27, 2006 7:36 AM
I want to scratch build a large scale wooden caboose for display in my house.  I have looked online for something but have met no success.  I am open to style, age, and such.  I wouldn't mind building a model of a Durango & Silverton narrow gauge caboose.  Any idea where I might come up with drawings/plans for a wooden caboose.

While I'm sure that you can find plans for the caboose that you mention, there are plans for a CNR standard wood caboose in the August, 1984 Model Railroader and also in the February, 1972 Railroad Model Craftsman.  In the April, 2004 issue of Model Railroader, there are plans for a NYC 19000-series wood caboose.  All of these articles feature photos and dimensioned drawings.

I think the old Kalmbach/MR "Freight Car Plans" book had some cabooses in there, and there have been a couple of books published on cabooses and caboose history that would include plans. Many railroad historical societies have published plans on cabooses of 'their' railroad, and I'm sure could provide copies.

You're unlikely to turn up a complete set of plans online.  Plans tend to be an item which is sold by the creator, or included with an article in a magazine.

The Underground Railway Press has just what you're looking for though.  They've got plans for any number of narrow gauge cabeese, including

Colorado & Southern 4-wheel
D&RGW Short Caboose
D&RGW Long Caboose
East Broad Top
Rio Grande Southern
Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes nos. 551 and 556

The plans listed above are $3.00 each, on the date of this posting (8-27-06)

These are all from the Bridgeport Plan Service section of their extensive list of over 2000 plans. I'm sure there are others in other sections of their list, but you get the idea.  Their plan list is a very useful resource to have a copy of.
