Scratchbuilding Stadium/Arena
Posted by nickl02 on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 6:17 PM
Looking for information on scratchbuilding a stadium or sports arena. Dimensions, plans, pictures, anything. I am modeling in HO scale. I know that the space required is very large, but this is still something Iwi***o pursue. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Well I know how I intended to do it. Franklin Field on the U. of Pennsylvania campus where the Eagles used to plany and won the 1960 NFL chamionship (I was there!) was right next to the freight highline and the field ran 90 degrees from the track direction. Even so with the width of the field and the stands it was at least a 100 yards wide and was a circular end so full scale HO it would have been almost 3 1/2' wide. If modeled the other way it would have been about 7'. I am convinced that large buildings even steel mills can be modeled by modeling the shortest dimension of the building. A 3/4 mile long hot strip mill is 150' wide typically so model the 150' end view. I'd do the same with the stadium or photo model it on trhe backdrop. Alas the plan for the highline through Philadelphia was impractical for a number of reasons and was scrapped. A square stadium or a corner could be modeled at a 45 degree angle with buildings in front to imply the full stadium was there when in reality it was a forced perpective.

Cool idea, but what a pain to scratch build. Would be neat to build a hockey arena, this way at least, I can see my team play. {Boston Bruins........yeah}. Can you even buy HO scale hockey guys ?

I am interested in building a stadium as well. I am modeling in O gauge, so I was thinking of building a part of it, and then making use of mirrors. Is this possible?? I would like to model a closed venue similar to the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. What are good materials to use in doing that?? O scale dimensions out there??

In O scale I can't even imagine the space it would take...as discussed in an earlier thread, even a small arena would require about 8'x8' in HO scale, and be two or three feet high...for O scale, I'd suggest starting with a small Doughboy-type pool and adding an "entrance" to one end!

The old Winnepeg Blue Bombers' football stadium was symmetrical as I recall, double decks on each side of the field. Guess you could build one set of stands facing away from you, and build half a football field, then have a mirror running down the "middle" of the field (splitting the goalposts in half) so you could see the stands reflection looking like the other set of stands.

Prr67,
If you live near a large public or university library, you might want to determine if they have any architectural guides, such as the classic Ramsey and Sleeper:
http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0471247626.html
These are large "cookbooks" or compendia of standard architectural elements for various types of buildings, and may include lacrosse field dimensions, and, possibly, a moto-cross track. I checked my copy of the NMRA Data Sheets, and although they give the dimensions of football and baseball fields, tennis courts and tracks, they don't include a lacrosse field.
