What was grandpa hauling?
Posted by graymatter on Monday, May 13, 2024 11:17 PM

One of several 1940's era wood kits that I found in grandpa's collection. The Prickly Ridge & Pacific Railroad is a fictional railroad operating somewhere between the Southern Pacific and Virginia & Truckee Railroads..... I think. I was wondering what cargo this would haul, what era or any other details the forum might offer up. Thanks in advance for yout time.

In that area and era the main commodities would probably be minerals. There could also be some less-than-carload shipments, maybe some fuel, and occasional machinery. During WWII you could also add an online military base for more traffic.

Logging was important as I recall. I believe Buster Keaton filmed "The General" there, largely because the logging railroads there in the 1920s had a lot of 19th century equipment they were still using.

Some of the finished products from logging, such as mine timbers and building lumber would also be hauled.  Also cattle, maybe from the Ponderosa.

The mineral industry might have multiple moves. Ore from mine to mill; concentrate from mill to smelter; metal output from smelter.  Also coal to all those.

All good replies.

I like to run the unusual boxcar.  Food stuff to the factories and general stores.

Boxcar with Company stationery  supplies  being dropped off at each station.

Just a little different yet neccessary.
