Anyone interested in seeing how junctions were fabricated and put together in the earlier days should watch the following video:

Junction Renewal

Granted it's according to British railway specs and standards but it should be just as applicable and probably very similar to how it was done in North America, with some adjustments in terminology.

Gives you a whole new appreciation for how it was done then and gratefulness that it doesn't require the same degree of prep work on your layout.

Enjoy!

And two more educational videos on track maintenance:

Vintage railway film - Day to day track maintenance, Part 1

Vintage railway film - Day to day track maintenance, Part 2

Fascinating stuff!

Does anyone know how often a section of trackage or junction(s) is inspected?  I presume it would also be determined by how busy the trackage or junction(s) is.

At about 42 sec on the first video, that guy was recently missing part of one finger.

I don't think I'd want to work the creosote machine.  Was that a child helping to do the castings?

The other thing I noticed was they dressed way better than some US Senators.

As an aside, Creosote is a carcinogen and should not be touched ever as it causes skin cancer. No amount is safe for humans, but those poor souls back when did not know it.
