That first engine in the lead is a GE U28CG, the Santa Fe had 10 of these Units, numbers were 350-359, and were built from July-August 1966, Santa Fe withdrew them from passenger service after an accident on February 9, 1966 and reassignied to freight duties.
The number of the lead locomotive is 7902
I was able to track down the picture on google search, the consist appears to be a usual combo of the Superchief/El Capitan in Keota, New Mexico. The date is August 1, 1970, nine months before the advent of Amtrak.
Most of the time, EMD F7's and FP45's were seen pulling the train, however a U28CG could sometimes be used in rare cases.

Interesting, the June 2016 Model Railroad News cover story on the new Rivarossi U-boats mentioned the ATSF units, until I read that yesterday I'd never heard of them.
BTW I assume the accident in question was in Feb, 1967 or '68, not 1966 (if the engines were delivered in July-Aug 1966)....
The accident was February 9, 1969 just west of Chillicothe, Illinois. The westbound Grand Canyon derailed behind GE power. See Route of the Warbonnets pp 14-15 by Joe McMillan.
