Ballast on CNW's line to Rapid City, S.D.
Posted by garyla on Saturday, September 14, 2013 10:26 PM

To the extent that CNW laid much ballast on its South Dakota lines, such as Pierre-Rapid City (pre-DM&E), did the company use the same famous pink rock ballast as was used on its main lines in Illinois, Wisconsin, etc.?

I'm putting together a manifest freight representative of the latter 1960s on that route, and thought that I could add a couple of MW ballast hoppers with the appropriate load.

Thanks in advance for any help!

From the look of those photos on the links that JaBear provided, I would say that the ballast is the same product put down by the C&NW on its Illinois mainlines.
