Train Horns
Posted by ns3010 on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 1:29 PM

Are there any set rules in effect for the use of train horns? I know that the long long short long is used at grade crossings. Are there any other horn signals set by the FRA or is it left up to the railroad?

Hello "ns3010," Horn (and whistle) signals are prescribed by railroad rulebooks. For current-day examples, you can see the Northeast Operating Rules Advisory Committee (NORAC) rule book at http://thebecketts.com/images/NORAC%208th%20Edition%20NJT.pdf I also wrote about this subject in my column, The Operators, in the June 2007 Model Railroader. So long, Andy

What about CSX?  Here in Ga, (Winder, Athens, Woodstock, Altoona), whenever I see them at grade crossings, they just pull the cord, or push the button, at the "X" sign, and release after they pass the crossing...I thought that was 'Emergency'?
