Kadee spiker works!!!
Posted by Bob grech on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 10:02 PM

After several spoiled attempts on some practice track, I finally got my Kadee spiker to work without kinking my (Micro Engineering) code 70 or 83 rail, yet still have enough force to drive the spikes into the ties. I used up 1 and 1/2 a boxes of spikes before I found the right shim and spring loads. Now that I found the right combination, I want to pass this info on to anyone who might be considering using this tool. I'm sure it will save you lots of time and fustration!

For code 70 rail:

- Use 2 thick and 3 thin (Kadee Spiker) shims under the rubber cushion.

- Back the spring off completely, then tighten 3 1/2 turns.

For code 83:

- Use 1 thick and 2 thin shims under the rubber cushion

- Back off spring, then tighten 5 turns.

Have Fun.... Bob.

Bob,

The Kadee Spiker is a wonderful tool and a great time saver as you found out. Getting the correct pressure to perform well takes a lot of time and spikes but is well worth the effort. Once set properly you can really get some track laid.

I didn't think Kadee made the spikes for them any longer.

Enjoy!!

Roger
