  CPRail,

Sounds like a basic switching yard with an oval going around it in double tracks, the websites for model RRing are full of design possibilties and if you are good at drawing there are many suggestions anyone here on this Forum will give you.

Try right here on the MRR website under switching yard plans and issues of MRR online. Switchyards are difficult to reach if you aren't used to the idea of leaving a great deal of space toward the inside of the 4 x 8 sheet you speak of.  The outer-most 18" is about as deep as you would want the track to extend to.

My choices for 4X8s were replaced by the now well developed around the room layout in a "U" shape with a switch yard on one end and a return loop on the other, all about 20" wide with the loop portion track accessable from the outer-most edges.

I hope you aren't totally confused now and any further help is available anywhere on this forum, some great layouts are posted on here!
