Logically, the answer would seem to be "no", but I think I read somewhere that decoders have a CV setting (or something) which allows this.

Harry,

Either a dual mode decoder or some of the sound decoders (e.g. QSI) will run on either DC & DCC.  Some decoders may require you to move a jumper on the board to switch it from one mode to another.  Other decoders will sense which mode you are running in and change automatically.

Some engines know the difference between DC and DCC. Broadway Limited is an example. ANY Engine with QSI onboard will sense the difference. There are other decoders that are also designed for dual mode operation so check before you buy.

I know Bachmann decoders are dual mode. Bachmann calls it backward compatibility. They'll work with DC and DCC. The best practice is to find out before you buy. I know there are some out there that won't.

I have used Bachamnn locos which use Lenz decoders, QSI, NCE, Digitrax and I believe MRC, (I think thats what comes in the Athearn Genesis locos).  All of them work on DC as well as DCC.

I would believe TCS, and most others would work both on DC and DCC.
