N scale Modulars

What are the standerds for an N scale Modular piece??

and how exactly do they work?
What i mean is how are you suppose to design the end so it fit's with others? and what is the best way to set it up and.... well, as you can see, i don't know much about modulres...any knowledge would be greatly appriciated!
