That's one of the nice things about Tortoise switch machines. They have extra contacts for power routing.

Brand of turnout please. Atlas it is a long problem, Walthers easier fix.
You must solder a feeder from the FROG to the machine. You also need a feeder from the bus to the machine. When the turnout is thrown the FROG is made hot and the train proceedes. Change the throw and the power is also changed so everything keeps going.

You'd probably be smart to get one of the books on track wiring. Kalmbach has at least one, available thru the online stores. Or, there should be several at your local hobby shop. They usually have diagrams, and you'll probably need it sooner or later.

Sounds like you have the power wires reversed on the track that the turnout is turning into.

That's only possible if he has insulated joiners on the divirging route. Atlas turnouts
are not power routing so if leads were reversed on the diverging route he would have a short all the time. He sounds like he's new to all this so he probably doesn't have
the diverging route isolated.

Cheers,

Ed
