Hi and welcome to the forum.

I would take a look at the Arizona Rock company web site

They have a lot of colors of real rock ballast. I use their product exclusively, though I use a much lighter shade than you are looking for. The Southern Pacific ballast they sell is a very dark grey color.

virginiabelt,
The Az. rock is your best bet. Make sure to test (glue down), many times a lighter stone will remain darkened once wet and glued.
Good luck and welcome,
Bob K.

You could stain your glue solution for the ballast with a very dark acrylic paint. As stated immediately above, by Bob, the ballast darkens a tad when glued, and dyed glue will help that much more.
