n scale bridge clearance
Posted by pickle01 on Friday, January 6, 2006 8:15 PM
Hello, I am building my first N scale layout, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what height clearance would be from the top of the foam on the upper level to the top of the foam on the lower level to allow for proper clearance of trains passing under a bridge on the upper level. Without it looking out of place, IE to high or to low. It will have earthen embankments on the sides. I am planning on using a plate girder type bridge. I will probably have it ballasted. Any information would be greatfully appreciated, Thanks Mike

NMRA says 1 7/8 inches from the rail tops to the bottom of the next level. Most people just round up to 2 inches.

To play safe, I use a 2 inch clearance for bridges and tunnel portals. This gives a safe headroom for twin stacks and autocarriers.
Cheers,

A quick search of the web uncovered this site. I've used this data for planning my projects. The numbers are right on and simple to use.

Rich even did the calculations for ALL gauges and scale.
