Mission style and Adobe style buildings/structures in HO scale
Posted by De Luxe on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 7:54 PM

Hi,

apart of Walthers Mission style station/freight house/bungalow, are there any other Mission style and maybe also Adobe style kits of buildings/structures available in HO scale? I´m very interested in having a southwestern touch including a mix of Spanish Colonial style (Mission style) and Native American Adobe style buildings, but besides those Walthers items mentioned above I can´t really find anything. Are there manufacturers who produce such items at all?

Theere's an article by Jim Gore in the Dec 2014 MR that inspired me to build some adobe buildings. My thread on my builds is at: http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/240237/2689714.aspx#2689714

It's not too hard to scratch up some of your own. Here's a pic of my completed scene.

No worries Frank, yes there is certainly some interesting stuff there; though I do like Mike build, which I’d forgotten about! Embarrassed
For a scratchbuilder who is after the Spanish influence, even though it’s in a larger scale, Ray Dunakins thread should be obligatory viewing.

Cheers, the Bear. Smile

Hi De Luxe

A basic adobe dwelling is not hard to make you need foam core board some wooden scewers, card, balsa or other hobby wood and some polyfilla or what ever your favorite brand of wall filler is.

And the right earth coloured acrylic paint thats dependant on the earth colour used predminantly on your layout and posibly some white or other pale colours for the lime wash

Adobe buildings where often lime washed or natural based painted some other colour on an anual basis to help protect them from the elements.

And often had dranage troughs for want of a better description to get the rain to drain off the roof away from the building walls.

If making multiple dwellings making a simple card template is usefull.

regards John

@ JaBear: Thanks for the link. They really have some nice kits there. I wonder why google didn´t show me this result!

@ mlehman: Thanks for the link. Interesting article. Adobe style indeed doesn´t seem to be too difficult to build because of it´s mostly smooth surfaces. How much time did you need from start to end to build your Adobe building?

@ John Busby: Thanks for the infos. Luckily I already have some matching colors at home.

I can't imagine I spent more than 10 hours on everything there, including adding some nice dim lights. The watertank was an add-on, so a couple more hours. It's basically building some wood boxes, then going at them with my big file to smooth things into a believeable shape.

If you'd like more pics or have any other questions, I'll be glad to help out.
