Does anyone know the color of the ballast used by the SLSF RR, specifically the line east of Springfield, MO thru Willow Springs and West Plains? Can you compare it to a certain brand and color of commercially available HO scale ballast?
Thanks,

RailPictures.net has a couple of shots of SLSF in the MO area.....
Don't know the geography there, but the photos DO show ballasting...you can compare it with the color of commercially available ballast materials....
Good Luck!

Ballast Color? Who Cares what color the ballast is. The railroad certainly does not. Whatever quarry is near at hand will do just fine. Railroads are very good at putting down different color ballasts. And then some tracks will see more traffic than others and so will have dirtier ballast. And then again some tracks will see more traffic than others and the railroad will come by with a load of new ballast.
Nope, the color of ballast is what ever color that box of cat litter is this month, that is what I use. When you have 14 scale milse of track you have to cut costs somewhere.
