Anyone out there have any experience with this kit, I am building one for my wharf area and some of the ships fittings supplied are second rate and want to know others solutions for them.

I don't know how far You want to go in detail...but when I was into ship building, I got most of my details and supplies from this site, I'll give you the link to. They have tons of detail parts for ships in many scales. It is a rather large PDF file, so it will take time to load:
