I would think switchbacks would be modus operandi for the two classes of locomotives that you mentioned. Make certain the tail tracks are long enough for the trains you want to take through the switchback, or that there is some other arrangement.
The Monarch branch of the Denver & Rio Grande had a switchback that went across US highway 50. They did not have enough room for a long tail track, so instead they put a siding at either end so they could take the train up in two blocks.
The only "con" I can think of would be electrical wiring for it if you are using hot frog turnouts. There might be some additional gaps / insulated rail joiners and extra feeders. Nothing complicated at all though.
I'm thinking of modeling a switchback for a small mining operation with a Shay and a Climax in On30. Any experience out there with this? Any information about pros and cons would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve
