Lets talk car shops
Posted by tinman1 on Thursday, January 15, 2009 6:01 PM

I have started doodling another track plan and have decided to go with a larger main city area. I scribbled down what I figured would be necessary in regards to a larger complex and am planning for  are decent sized, for being compressed that is. Here is what I'm looking at

-REA terminal- 2 tracks, 20" in length or so with a concrete dock between the tracks. There is also one between the building and tracks as well, with the building being 8X 14.

-Passenger Station- 3-tracks 32" long ending into the terminal. The station is 8x12 with canopies running between the tracks and a post office off one corner.

-Car repair shop- 16"x8", 2 tracks entering with a third track coming out of the building holding trucks and wheelsets. A truck loading dock and attached 4x4" building, probably a machine shop.

-MOW shop- 4x8", 1 track next to going into an attached 2"x6" shed

-Pass car shop- 7"x 16", 2 tracks entering, 1 being a stubbed track out the back

-Paint shop- 5"x16", 1 track in

-???? shop- 12"x 20", 4 tracks entering, 2 stubbed out the back.

-team track/s- 2 tracks with dock between, 36" long. I know, it's not a shop, but it is part of the big picture.

I have not got to the other end of the yard area, where the turntable and roundhouse will be located, along with servicing (water, coal, oil etc). Given what I have described here, do you think the shops are sized alright, or are they still horribly small, and is there any other shops that would do well to be included. I have thought about a foundry shop and power house. I have room to put in another couple buildings if needed, but also want to retain enough room for the servicing roads and a little open area as well. This is in HO scale by the way.
