Woodland scenics incline
Posted by GTX765 on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 9:58 PM

I have read the forums in the search and still need more info please. I have a new layout and scratched my old one. I have a 8x11 modular style layout. The layout will not be moved but his will fit the space i have. So imagine two 3x8's and two 2x5's making a 8x11. I am running bigboys to sd9s. So a large variety. I wish to purchase the woodland scenics incline sets but i have limited space. Is the 4% too much? I would like to reach 4in high but I may need to try 2% at 2in. My radius will not fall under 22" radius. This is my first incline project so please let me know you thoughts. I am flexible on this but sometimes think too big. Pirate [oX)]

Woodland Scenics also makes a 2% kit that rises to 4" high, but it will require a 16' run to do so. I used one of these kits on my layout, and once the hill was crested, I found I didn't have another 16' of run to get back down at a 2% grade. I used the 3% grade kit for the downhill run in order to compress the length to fit. As a result, all traffic is regulated by the grade; unless a train is double or triple headed, it won't make the climb up the 3% grade.

I think you'd be asking for a lot of headaches trying to get that Big Boy up and over the 4% incline.
