Yes we use them they are called rail joiners. Some people solder them with a soldering iron or soldering gun. But most slide them on and leave them. I myself will solder curved track and short pieces of straight track but on the longer staights I leave unsoldered and leave a small gap for expansion. I build mostly modules that are exposed to weather extremes and stored in the cellar when not used.
Soldering is like welding but not as hot.

I'm get starting my first layout with my dad and I have many doubts, thanks for your atention. My dad has a more time in railroad model but this is his second layout. With the progress of the layout I will post photos.Hugs
Keep at it. You will find all the help and advise you will need here. Otherwise someone will point you in the right direction. Have you purchased any books or magazines to help you?
