How about giving it that prototype-railroad atmosphere and painting it institutional green?
I painted my layout room a Pullman Green color. I saw it in a previous issue of MR and knew i had to paint the room that color. Turned out great. No regrets. Paint the room the color you would like.

All the walls started sky blue and the adjoining walls behind the layout got the backdrop treatment.
There is a corner in this shot but it blends in pretty well.
