Layout Websites
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 5:45 PM
I see most of you guys have websites that you post pictures and what not of your layout. I want to start my own layout site. Most of them with out a special ending like www.bobsLayout.com instead of something like www.BobsLayout.geocities.com did you pay for this address? If not how did you get it. Also is there a site that will let you set up your website easily not usind HTML code for the whole thing. How did you set up your website?

You need two things, a Domain name & a webhost.

A URL (website address) like www.bobsLayout.com uses a domain name that is registered with one of the many registrars like godaddy.com and others. You shouldn't have to pay any more than $10/year to register it. After registering the domain, you have to have the registrar "point" the name to the proper location of your webhost (the service where all your files live.)

There's not many ways around having to know a little html code if you are going to set up and maintain your own website. Some services like geocities offers free tools for setting up a site on their servers . You can use Microsoft Word to set up pages and use their publi***o web function, but I've never used it.

I set up all my sites using HTML at first and currently use a combination of that and ASP/Visual Basic scripting since most of my sites involve reading or writing to databases for one reason or another.

I'd find some high school computer geek to set up the basic code for you and show you how to insert photos, add or change text, etc. Once you have the basic HTML code, it's pretty clear how you can modify it without ruining anything. (Keep a back-up in case you do.)

For mine, my website was created on Yahoo. You would have to be a member to access it. If you wanted to, look under the Geocities link on the site of Yahoo. Mine was free.

Many Internet providers provide some bandwidth for non-commercial Homepages (websites) for their customers. I use Roadrunner through Time Warner and I have an FTP site (just really a place to dump some photos for family, friends and to use in postings here). This is provided as part of the Roadrunner package and is available to anyone using the service. MS Word for windows may have FTP capabilities, I am not sure (as I use a Mac). If you want to create a regular webpage you need to have a program to layout the page such as MS Frontpage (windows). There are many other programs out there (most of them I think are better, but Frontpage is a common one). If you do not want the name of the site (ie: Yahoo, Roadrunner, etc.) in your URL, then you also need the host server (and pay) as has been mentioned before as well as the registered domain name.

My train stuff is at: http://home.rochester.rr.com/howmus/TrainLayout/

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Trainweb.org is a great place to host a train-related website. There are no annoying pop-ups and unlimited bandwidth (the amount of data you can send each month) and almost unlimited storage of files. It is free but has none of the built-in features like geocities has for uploading and templates for sites. I would recommend this over geocities any day.

Let me ask you guys a question... I actually run a web server at my company. We only host our own website right now. I've been thinking about expanding out and hosting other people's website, how much would you guys be willing to pay for a web host with a decent amount of storage and great up time? I also dable in web design being that I handle my company's website, I use a combination of CSS and HTML on all my websites. It's a very powerful combination. And how many would want a registered domain verses a sub account? (IE: www.bobslayout.com Vs. www.me.com/bobslayout?) Let me know what you all think.... And if I get enough interest I'll bring it to my boss....
