Woodland Scenic's Scenic Ridge Layout Kit
Posted by jvivlemore on Thursday, December 27, 2012 1:11 AM

OK - I've seen a few posts about this kit and watched several videos and am pretty impressed with the amount of detail in this kit assuming everything in the video was part of the kit.  I know it's very expensive (around $600 or so) for everything once you purchase the parts of the kits to complete it.  Has anyone done this?  Is the quality worth it?  It looks like a fun way of learning the basics before trying a lot of this on your own.

From the contents list of the three different kits you need to build the layout, it seems, as if all the material is included to build that layout - with the exception of locos and rolling stock. The price looks steep, but reasonable, as most people underestimate the cost of scenic materials and structures.

OTOH, $ 600 + is quite a lot of money for a rather simple layout in terms of the track plan. If you intend this layout just to build up skills, there are better, cheaper ways to do so. Try your hand at Woodland´s Learning kits.

I agree with Ulrich, $600 is way too much for a simple layout. Get Flextrack and use joiners. Get a Track Nipper to cut the track, from LHS. Note how I made a narrow ridge look like a dense conifer forest, that is only 1 inch deep and cost nothing. Cut and colored a varied green from black packing sponge or cardboard. Then layered the rows with glue. Bob Hahn Do you know how to make trees ? I use 5-6 circles cut from a single layer (of three layers) Push these onto a stained wooden skewer, dip in dilute Matte Medium. Spray with spray adhesive. Then, sprinkle on fine or medium green turf foam. For close-up trees, get a box of Scenic Express Super Trees ($25 box will make over 60 trees. Or get Super Trees crate for $125 and make 350 trees, (as I have just done!). You dunk in Matte Medium and spray on adhesive, then, sprinkle with turf foam, like the furnace filter trees.

I built the River Pass kit.  It contains everything you need except trains and power if you buy all three kits.
