In your freight yard I would suggest you use a fine turf rather than course.  First, yards have a lot more dirt in the ballast, as they were never heavily ballasted like a main line.  Second, people have to walk in yards, much easier to walk on fine than all the lumps.  Just sprinkle some fine over the course you've put down.
