About jpryke
I have been interested in Model Trains since the age of 2 when my mother was able to find a wind-up set despite war-time shortages. By the age of five, I was into Lionel, and by eight, I was building kits for most of the rolling stock. At the age of 8 1/2 I built my first HO kit, and within 6 months had begun construction of a 4X8 folding pike in my bedroom. My father saw the light by 1950 (I was 10), and we built an 8X13 ft layout in part of my mother's dining room. Over the next 12 years, I dabbled in different aspects of model railroading (staying in HO) including: Colorado Narrow Gauge, Traction, and main-line railroading with a private labled pike. I scratch built my first New Haven steam locomotive in 1958, and have focused on that prototype ever since. I am best remembered for my 38X28 ft HO Model of the New Haven from New York to Boston; which included a detailed urban model of Boston's Union Freight RR that ran down the waterfront in Atlantic Ave. After taking early retirement in 1997, I began to write articles on a regular basis for Model Railroader; and finished my first book for Kalmbach (Building City Scenery for your Model Railroad) in 1999. Since then I have worked on two other books as well as over 30 articles for Model Railroader Magazine. In 2005 we moved to Cape Cod, and I began construction of the New Haven's branchline from Boston to Provincetown at the tip of the Cape as it appeared in September, 1948. That pike is now 80% operational, and one of the few models of this portion of the New Haven's operations. While Model Railroading is a good part of my life, I spend much of my time with my wife, and our four granddaughters (ages 21, 20, 17 and 8).
