Fred has been an off and on railfan since he was a youngster who rode L&N's "Accommodation" in the 1940's from Memphis to Bells or Humboldt to visit his grandparents who farmed near Alamo, TN. As a young man with a family he ceased being an active railfan but retained his interest in them. In 1979, after moving to Lancaster, PA his family gave him a gift of a ticket for a Lancaster Chapter, NRHS excursion to Mystic, CT. A long conversion with the car host convinced him to join the Chapter and he eventually became active in the chapter management by becoming Editor of the chapter's newsletter in 1988. He remained active as an officer/director for 30 years until forced to step down for health reasons. After moving to Lancaster he became interested in the PRR and has collected a number of HO scale models. He does not have a layout but, when able, runs them on the Short Line Model Rail Club where he is a member.
