I started rr modeling a few years ago, but set it aside for a couple of years while dealing with more urgent matters. I recently came back after health issues left me with way too much free time in need of filling.
I absolutely consider myself an utter novice. I am totally self-taught -- I don't know anybody else who does model rr'ing, and the nearest hobby shop is well >50 miles away. I'm in absolutely no rush to finish anything. It's a case of the journey itself being more important than any final product (is a layout ever truly "done"?)
I have no interest (as of Winter '18) in anything more than a simple DC layout unconcerned with historical accuracy, DCC, elaborate yards, etc. If the "wheelhouse/turntable" consists of my hand, then I'm OK with that -- the only people seeing it are me and my 6 y/o grandson. I'm limited by space to a 4x10 layout. It's a double loop with a spur and a siding, what I hope will be six wired turnouts (one manual). I can't see myself running more than two locos at once, though 90% of the time it will be one. In time, I'll block off track so I can run two separate trains.
