I can't believe I missed this post! To echo what everyone else has said, thank you for your service to our country, and God keep you safe. I see you were able to post yesterday (6-17), so hopefully, you'll have a chance to visit from time to time. We'll always welcome a visit from you!

I understand what you're saying.

Now, will someone please explain the other couple of recent posts to me.

Thanks.

All's quiet on the SWA front.   Things are going well and it's nice to "get into the groove" of yelling at privates and leaning hard on buck sergeants once again!  My insider at BIG ARMY headquarters (or is it hindquarters?) tells me that my retirement packet did not go through the proper channels when it was denied (due to some arcane and obscure regulation) so it's now going through a review board.  There is a chance, however small, that I may yet be allowed to retire and go home.  We'll wait and see.

Anyway, the chance dinner with Ian was great!   It is very nice to meet face to face with forum members.  Ian and Frances are wonderful people and I am very honored to have shared a dinner with them.  I didn't send Ian home empty handedWink [;)].  Hope to see the photos soon!  Take care.

My wife and I had dinner with Jack outside his base before he left for overseas. Very enjoyable and a pleasure to meet up personally with a forum member. Photo to follow when we return to the UK.

TJ,

I'll just add a ditto to what everyone else has already said.

You're a soldier and accept your duty to go where your commanders ask you to go, I salute you for that kind of dedication. Please remember this very, very important fact ..... America supports, respects and yes, even loves it's military men and women. Even those citizens who may not agree with the political reasoning for this war  still hold our military men and women close to their hearts, perhaps even more than those who see these deployments as supporting a "just and necessary cause".

Take good care of yourself and know that you have my respect and best wishes and that of a grateful nation.

Walt

Ian, call me anyway on my cell.  I will not be leaving the country for a little while yet, I'd love to at least talk with you while you are in my area.

I thought about that myself, but they would just end up car bombing each other over coupler pin length or what exactly "G" scale means.  Fundamentalist HO scalers?  Now that's scary!

Thanks to all you guys, I might not get more time to post for a while after tonight.  I'll miss all of you, but I'll be sure to drop by and at least say hello when I get the chance.  There is something special about model railroaders, Garden scalers above all.  Cpt Bob has gone above and beyond to help me on a personal level, so I give him a very special thank you.  I've visited some of the forum members and they have all been very good, kind and generous hosts.  Benny, sorry I couldn't stop by again sooner but I'll be sure to make a special trip to see you when I get back.  Dave, even though you live in NVA I never made the time to stop in, I'll fix that when I return (and I expect progress on you pike so get busy).   Have fun!

T-Jack :

Multiple dittos to all of the above replies.  The father of my only grandchild also leaves on Friday (from Ft. Lewis, Wa) with his Kiowa chopper unit.  A few years ago they told me I was too old and weathered to join.  So I give everyone in uniform my endless prayers & gratitude for making our lifestyle possible , including being able to surf this forum.  I'll be up early Friday to raise a toast in your direction.

Embrace those you love today. Tomorrow may be too late.

Thanks for the encouragement, I leave Friday at 0600, bags in hand.  I'll go because I have to, but I'm just too tired with it all to enjoy the "adventure" this time.  22 years, my knee has pins and screws, I've had broken wrists, shoulder, hip and foot, I've lost 20% of my hearing in my right ear, along with however many thousands of cuts, bruises and small burns and bug bites.  22 years, it hurts getting out of bed now (can't let the FNG's see that).  22 years, I know when it's going to rain or snow by what piece of me aches.  One more rodeo, then I hang up my spurs and write poetry and grow flowers or something.  I think I'll keep the whip though......

I'm so sorry to hear that.  You and all of the men and women over there, need to be at home with their families.  I hope that you'll be careful and come home safely.

I know that when you're in the military, you follow orders and do what you're told.  Be safe and know that we'll all be thinking about you.  Check in when you can.

And remember to come home to those that love you.  I'll be praying for you.
