To Kalmbach Publishing,

This is a great web forum but it is missing one thing... A members Photo Gallery so we can post photos of layouts, locos, projects, etc.

Its one thing to read about someones latest project, advice, etc. Why not let us the reader be able to share what it is we are working on with other readers?

Seams like a good idea and it would allow those of us without webpages to share our work.

How about it?

Hi all,

I've forwarded the link to this question to Erik Bergstrom, the trains.com content manager. Wish I could help with this, but as they say, "I just work here." [:p] I hope he responds soon.

Thanks Rene,

This topic was also posted in the Model Railroader forum since it is just as relevent there too. I think the more veiwers can see what others have done and how, the more interest they will have doing there own projects.

I know what you mean, vsmith. I especially like to see the work of structures. Some of the other large scale forums (oops, can I say that here?!) has had some great kitbashing and scratchbuilding photos. Very inspiring.

I think it would really foster a lot of interchange when we can see others work. I just finished converting a Bachmann 2-4-2 Columbia into a 2-4-0 plantation type. No one outside of a few friends will ever see it, or see how easy it was to convert. I am sure others have similar projects that they would like to show them off. One thing is that seeing how something is done can be a catalyst to trying it yourself. For example, I would like to see how some approaches scratchbuilding structures in 1/2 scale. Its a lot more complicated than scratching in HO (way bigger, harder to handle). I have several structures I will need to build and would benifit from others knowledge. I think thats true for other users regarding locos, cars, landscaping, etc. Seeing each others work takes us out of the dark and gives us vision.

Another vote for having a picture gallery. Or at least make it so we can draw too, when we use this reply form!

I think that would be a great idea. Especially if we could each put up a picture or two of our layouts to show others what we are talking about when we speak of them and the work we have put into them.

vsmith:

I would LOVE to see the work you are doing on the Plantation Loco. I was a member of the Hawaii RR Society while I lived there. Here's the link to their page:

and check out Laupahoehoe Train Museum (pronounced lah pah HOY HOY) at:

Good luck with the project.

Thanks for those links. My engine is based more on the restored engine operated by the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific RR.

Check out www.sugercanetrain.com

I am trying to get access to a digital camera (sheesh, they're expensive!) so I can send some photos. Its now finished, it went very fast, only a few evenings work. It looks so much better than the stock loco, not so streched out and lanky, more stout and solid. While doing it I also realized I could have simply converted it into a tank type loco by adding side tanks and a fuel bunker behind the cab. If I ever pick up another 2-4-2???

Finially, people agree with me that we should post photos. It is a great way to show the hobby from a different perspective. May be we should even have a photo contest or something. I would love to share my photos. Thanks for bringing this topic up.

Hello everybody,

As usual, I have to play the bad guy... [V]

We have two problems with photo galleries. First and foremost is the cost. If allowed all members (130,840 as of today) to post photos we would become overwhelm with the cost over the course of a year or so. We know that not all members would post photos, but the most active members would probably be the most active photo posters. Say over the course of a year we got pictures equal to one quarter of our users (again, I don't think that many would post, but the ones who do post would make up for those who don't). That would be 32,500 photos! The only alternative would be to charge a fee, and we're not going there.

The second big problem is controlling what's posted. It's never been a problem over on the Garden Railways side, but in a couple of situations on the Trains side of the forums I had to delete user profile photos because of the inappropriate nature of the photos. I don't want to let a couple of photos spoil a good time, but since it's difficult from a manpower standpoint to monitor the forums, I'd hate to see something inappropriate get posted and have a bunch of you users see it prior to us deleting it. And again, I hate to lump you all together with someone who acted inappropriately, but since it's free to register on the site, anyone can sign up and post inappropriate photos for a laugh (in their mind). That's what concerns me the most. Some kid with too much time on his hands signs up a Trains.com and posts photos he downloaded from a porn site.

I think photos would be a great addition to our forums too, but unfortunately we're just not ready to take that step. For now, we'll have to settle for links from your own web sites. I know that doesn't do anything for those of you without web sites, so I'll investigate so other options to see if there's an affordable solution for everyone. For example, I know you can post photos at www.ofoto.com and have friends and family members look at them and purchase prints. I'm not sure if it's possible to send a direct link without need a password, etc. I'll look around when I have time and report back.

Sorry we can't do anything more right now.

Best wishes,
Erik
