The tank is a large peanut can, covered with tongue depressors (medical quality ones not the hobby store variety-I suspect at best they are medical grade rejects)-they are a very good, clean hardwood. I put a 1/4 x 1/16 flat of styrene on the can to glue the slats to in addition to the narrow metal band at the top and bottom of the can. The bands are 1/8" ? dia styrene rods joined with a 1" section of tubing to hold them/simulate the turnbuckles. The stand is 5/8" sq hardwood pieces from Home Depot Trim/moulding department--rabbeted/dadoed glued/nailed--you can't see it in the picture ( I'll get the 12 year old to explain sizing pics) but the top is open except for a small ring od shingles-I use it for a planter-I'll try to get some better pics posted

I hate to say this...but that engine is a "SOW's EAR." It is a 30 some dollars SCIENTIFIC TOYS locomotive in the style of Christmas Trains. I have been working with these inexpensive thinsg trying to make them look better.

I use them to practice kitbashing and the like. next year I am goingt o go all out and detail one.

These locomotives are the subject of ridicule..."I have done my best to turn SOW's EARs into SILK purses."

It hasn't been too bad. We've had some rain (and hail!) so things right now are pretty green. But I'm dreading the summer, though...

I'm taking my layout pretty slow right now. I've got some landscaping to do in the front first, and trying to decide on if I should put the layout in the back or the front yard. Back is good because you can sit out under the porch and the fans and watch the train go by, but is open season for my daughter and her soccer practice. Front is good because no soccer balls bouncing, but if you have guests there's no place really to sit and watch the train. You'd have to bring out chairs, and it would limit the operating time to late in the day, early evening.

So, I gotta decide.......

I'm amazed how much my 2 year old likes to help. When I set up my track (see my first post for my layout) he's right there besides me.

Is that a Bachmann or a LGB engine? Most of my engines are AC, USA, & MTH
I only have a Hesiler that is Bachmann The layout looks great Glad to see it up and running

It is good to hear from you. I had forgotten that your seasons are the inverse of ours in the Northern Hemisphere.

I look forward to seeing your plans and pics.

The loop grows slowly since I have to mail order the track from places far away. I was able to add some feet to Ian's Curve, my next feat will be to add some trackage to Poor Vic's Curve on the exact opposite of the line. I'm gonna try to play some extra gig for money. The side opposite of what currently is the Garden will have a sort of yard facility (or at least some sidings).

I plan to put a siding at Ian's Curve and eventually some structures or platforms.

Have you considered getting a blog? I have a free one from blogspot. It allows you to upload pics and post them in a pretty simple manner. You can also make picture links to his forum.

How soon do you think it will be before you get a complete loop, things will change for the better, to a tremendous extent when you can go round and round!

I have just completed (nearly) my first building with Jigstones, I have done a lot of other things but this is the first building off plans and i will copy you and Brian when it is installed. Anyone else interested, let me know. It is a large station complete with light and telephone bvox.
